On September 1st 2004, in the small town of Beslan in the Russian republic of Ossetia, a school was seized by a group of terrorists predominantly from the neighbouring republics of Chechnya and Ingushetia. The world’s media instantly turned its attention to this terrible drama, broadcasting almost without interruption the sage of the fate of the 1288 hostages, children and adults, held inside the school. And then just 2,5 days later, with terrorists’ demands for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya not met, the siege of the school reached a bloody and tragic conclusion. Some 341 hostages were killed, 178 of them children, as a firefight broke out between the terrorists and the Russian military that were by now surrounding the school.

So why and how did this happen ? Who were the victims ? Who were the perpetrators ? What was going on behind the scenes ? Who was pulling what strings ? Who should be blamed for the tragic outcome ? What does it tell us about Russia today and tomorrow ? In short, what is the real story behind the transformation of Beslan from small-town anonymity to worldwide notoriety?
